1995年の阪神・淡路大震災を覚えていますか？
Do you remember the Hanshin / Awaji (Kobe) great earthquake disaster in 1995?
神戸を襲った未曾有の大地震は、私の心にまだ深く残っています。
The unprecedented big earthquake which hit Kobe still remains in my heart deeply.
小学校から神戸で育った私はいつも母から「　神戸は台風も地震もないいい所なのよ　」といつも聞かされていました。
I who had grown up from the elementary school in Kobe was always made to hear,
"Kobe is a good place without the typhoon and the earthquake either" from my mother.
あの朝、愛犬のナンドが午前5時30分に遠吠えを始めていました。
That morning, NANDO of the love dog had begun howling at 5:30 am.
実はその一週間前からシェパードのナンドとラブラドールの銀次郎がなぜか5時30分になると決まって遠吠えをするようになっていました。
From the one week before, when becoming 5:30 in the morning, NANDO of German shepherd and Ginjiro of Labrador began howling.
私は「一体ナンドはどうしてんやろ？」と思いながら、後10分寝たいのに等とブツブツ言っていました。
"What happened to NANDO??" I thought, and I muttered with in what wanted to sleep for more 10 minutes.
その時です。グラグラグラ！！と下から突き上げるような大きな揺れが起り次には大きな横揺れが来ました。その大きな揺れは、いつまでたっても止まらなかったのです。
Then the big shake which is pushed up from under happened and a big rolling came to next. The big rolling never stopped.
「今日はえらい長い事揺れとおで。」
"It is shaking much longer than usual!"
と私はベッドの端を持ちながら叫んでいました。
I shouted, having an end of a bed.
揺れが収まって犬舎に行くと落下したものもなく犬達は「きょとん！」としていたので一先ず安心し、
Shaking being settled, I went into the kennel. There was nothing which fell down, and dogs looked blank. Those brought some relief to me.
きっと奈良が震源地だったのだろうと勝手に解釈していました。助手達と地震について一言、二言話した後、犬舎に戻って掃除を始めラジオをつけると,
地震速報が流れていて何と震源地は「神戸市垂水区」と言っていました。
It was interpreted without permission that Nara might have been an epicenter surely.
After I talked with assistants about the earthquake, we started to clean the kennel.
When I turned on the radio, the earthquake news flash flowed. It said "The epecenter was Tarumi-ku Kobe."
そんなバカな。こっちでもこんなに揺れたのに震源地が垂水って？
Give me a break. Though even it shook so much here in Nara, was the epicenter Tarumi?
一体どうなってしまったのか？
On earth how has it turned out?
母は姉は姪達は、無事なのか？私の知る限りの人たちは無事なのか？
As for the mother, as for the older sister, are nieces safe? Are the people that I know safe?
電話をかけるとどうしてか繋がりません。
It is not connected somehow when I call.
電話局の案内が流れてくるのを聞きながら本当に大地震が神戸に起ったのだと感じました。
It was thought that the big earthquake happened in Kobe truly, hearing that guidance to a telephone office was made.
それからはテレビに釘付けです。
Then my eyes were glued to the TV.
一体神戸がどうなっているのか情報が知りたくていてもたってもいられません。
On earth it was not stood even if I wanted to know how Kobe turns out.
しかしテレビで見る映像は、絶望的な映像ばかりでした。
However, the image seen on the television was only a hopeless image.

　　　　　　　　Kobe is burning.
私たちの街、神戸が燃えているのです。業火になめられるように焼き尽くされているのです。
Our town, Kobe is burning. It is burned exhaustively so that it is licked for the flames of hell.
高速道路が落ち、ビルが崩れ火の街になったその姿をテレビはそのまま私たちに知らせてくれました。
A highway fell, and the television may have just told us about the figure which a building collapsed, and became the town of the fire.

　　　　　　　　　Kobe burns.
イギリスのホストマザーは、末期の癌だというのに病院から電話をくれました。
Though it was thecancer of the last stage, the British host mother called from the hospital.
　「　アキコ、あなたは生きているか？あなたの家族は大丈夫なのか」と
　"Akiko, are you alive?" Is your family all right?
ウェールズのおじいちゃんは、すぐに地図で神戸と奈良の位置を計り被災を心配する手紙をくれました。
Welsh Grandfather measured a position of Kobe and Nara with a map immediately, and worried about suffering a calamity was given.
私が災害救助犬の存在を知ったのはこの時でした。
It was that I got to know existence of a rescue dog at this time.
スイスから関空に降り立った救助犬達は、検疫等で迅速に現場に向かう事が出来ずせっかく地球の裏側から救助に来てくれたのにその気持ちが行動として受け入れられず非常に残念であった事等を知りました。
Although the rescue dogs which came down from Switzerland to Kansai International Airport could not go to the spot quickly by quarantine etc. but came for rescue from the other side of the earth with much trouble, the feeling was not accepted as action but they got to know that it was very regrettable etc.
犬の訓練士でありながら、その存在も知らずこの一大事に何も役に立つ事が出来ないという歯がゆい思いを二度としたくないと心に決めて救助犬の訓練を始めようと思いました。
I thought that I wanted to never do irritating thought that nothing could be helpful for this serious affair without knowing the existence while being a training person of the dog I made up my mind, and to begin the training of the rescue dog.
まず、国内で初めて救助犬を訓練しておられた「富山」の坂井さんをお訊ねしたりスイスの救助犬協会にも伺い訓練等拝見させて頂きました。
At first I visited Mr. Sakai, who had the rescue dog trained for the first time in Japan, also visited the rescue dog association of Switzerland, and had a look at training etc.
今でも心に響いているのは、私がブレヒト氏に、救助に出かけるボーダーラインはどこかと伺った時に
When I asked Mr. Brecht where the border line for help , what affected my heart was…
「地球上で、どこで地震が起ろうとも私たちスイス人は必ず救助に行く。」
"Even if an earthquake will be generated where, on the earth, we Swiss goes for help by all means".
と力強いお返事を頂いた。　地球の何処へでも。
I got the powerful answer. 　Even where of the earth!
外国傭兵ではスイス人が一番強いと何かの本で読んだ記憶がある。
With the mercenary, the Swiss is strongest with the memory which was read in some book.
それでなのかどうかは定かではありませんが、彼らの持つ強い使命感と勇気に心を打たれました。
Thus I was not sure, but it was touched by strong sense of duty and courage that they had
帰国してからは、なかなか訓練が上手く進まず悶々とする日々が続きましたが、10数年かけてやっと自分なりのマニュアルが出来てきました。
そしてこの長い年月に変わらずに思った事はやはり、日本は地震国なので災害救助犬は必要であるという事です。
Although the days which training does not progress well easily after going back, but are made worried continued, its own manual has been made at last over about ten years. And having intended without changing in this long time after all, the rescue dog is necessary because Japan is still a land of earthquakes.
生業として救助犬を教えようとは考えていませんが、プロの訓練士さん達が救助犬に関心を持ってくれて自分たちも訓練をしてみようと思って下さるのであれば何かお手伝いできるのではないかと思います。
Although I don't think that a rescue dog will be taught as an occupation, I think that some can be helped if professional trainer thinks that one will also train with concern to a rescue dog.
